Another Victory
Connor can have visitors on a 1-on-1 basis and they need to go through Shan. He has been asking to see his friends. So if anyone would like to visit, please text to arrange a visit. 360-984-4780
Well, today was a long day on little sleep for both Connor and Dave. Overnight he has been learning to cough all the way up to his mouth, in lieu of utilizing his trach at the mid point. With the cap on the trach, the struggle has been having a throat full of a pipe and trying to get phlegm from his lungs up and out. He is getting the hang of it this afternoon, but it meant a pretty restless night for him due to using stomach muscles that have been dormant and a sore throat. It was restless for Dave due to it sounding like Connor was choking on each cough, then waiting for him to take his next breath.
Today was a down day from PT & OT but he still had the Speech Therapist come by to watch him eat his breakfast. Afterwards she graduated him to Purée and some chunky foods like fruit cocktail for example to be eaten at each meal.
Thankfully he got this release, due to the next event that occurred. During the mid part of the day, the feeding tube became completely clogged and was removed from his nose. This was a fantastic victory in itself to Connor who celebrated by picking his nose and telling everyone who came by how great he was doing without a hose up his nose. It does put a pretty heavy burden on him though, to eat 100% of his calories now in lieu of having a feeding tube. Additionally he began taking his pills orally in lieu of being crushed and pumped into his feeding tube. He does not have an issue taking pills and thankfully all swallowing is going down the correct tubes currently.
Tonight will be the first real test of this system that will require them to wake him every 4hrs to take his pills in lieu of sneaking in quietly and pumping the pills into his feeding tube. Tonight Connor has already requested Ambien from the nurse to assist him to sleep so he can rest and be ready for his therapy sessions he has upcoming tomorrow. Hopefully rest will come and stay tonight and we can continue our progress in earnest tomorrow - goodnight all.
