Currently due to his condition and being in ICU, Connor is not accepting any visitors at this time.
We waited for the doctors to make their rounds this morning before we made our update. And it ended up that they didn't make it to us until 4!pm (several trauma surgeries had delayed the team):
Connor has had a dramatic change on his head related to swelling reduction in the past 48hrs. He no longer is lopsided on his right side and the neurosurgeon is pleased with the reduction which will help with the wake up. They are reducing the meds to find a level spot to assist with the plateau we are at currently.
It was a quiet day up to3pm, as they were able to reduce all levels of medication and completely shut off the propofol which was keeping him sedated. At 3pm the moving around began and progressed into aggressive behavior as he tried to get off the bed with only half of his body working. For the next two hours he wrestled with anyone who was in attendance in his room. They finally made the decision that he was in need of some propofol to assist with his discomfort.
A big decision today was made to assign a one-to-one nurse/patient ratio to him. This is due to his aggressive behavior and not allowing a nurse to manage two rooms without utilizing too much sedative for Connor. In order to get him out of the ICU, they need him to progress forward rather than going backwards - was great to hear in our opinion. We have been taking turns to be in his room at all times due to his activity and potential of falling when the nurse would leave the room.
As we turn him over to the night nurse, we were able to understand that the drug protocol for the day will be followed through tonight to see if we can find a balance for him and still be able to maintain the restful state that he needs. Back at it in the morning - we need our restless sleep also - goodnight.
